Development of speech and language is a helpful indicator of child overall development and cognitive ability. In children, speech delay is strongly connected with having difficulty in socializing, paying attention, understanding the commands, does not respond to music, sounds or even moving toys. As parents, we have to observe and monitor our child development strictly because these behavioral characteristics indicate a caution sign of possible speech delay.

Causes of speech delay:

• Oral impairment is problems with the tongue or palate (the roof of the mouth). Problems in short frenulum (the fold beneath the tongue) where it can limit movement of tongue for speech production.
• Hearing problems are also commonly related to delayed speech. That is why an audiologist should test a child’s hearing whenever there is a speech concern. Kids who have trouble hearing may have trouble in fluency as well as understanding, imitating and using language.

What can parent do?

• Speech delay can be cured with strong determination. Parents’ supports are highly needed for child to change and improve their disability.
• Spend a lot of time communicating with your child. Try to encourage them to imitate sounds and body gestures.
• Start reading to your child since they were baby. Read a book that suitable with their age. Choose a book from various colors, texture and shape with large attractive picture and words.
• Let practice to them an interesting music movement with colorful video so that they can follow and imitate.
